Zombies are a little overdone these days but I still find myself sucked into the occasional movie featuring the undead. I just can’t seem to help myself. I’ve heard of the French film La Horde many times but never watched it…until now.
A group of French coppers set out to exact revenge on a group of drug dealers/gangstas for killing one of the family. However, unbeknownst to them, on this very special night, a zombie outbreak occurs spreading faster than anything and forcing the enemies to join forces in order to survive. Tension is high among the survivors but that’s inevitable.
Horde zombies are not “rage” zombies or Romero zombies, but what I like to think of as natural zombies. By that I mean, they move at human speed and do not possess super strength. So, they are somewhat more believable. Gore is high, as well as CGI unfortunately. The CGI was a bit disappointing as I like to think the French deal more in amazing prosthetic work and less the laziness of the much hated CGI.
The action is pretty hardcore. They must train the French police officers in some extreme superhero-like hand-to-hand combat or something. They are badasses. ‘Nuff said.
Without giving anything away, all I can say is that, overall, I enjoyed the film but I did have some disappointment. I just expect more from the French. I expect to be shocked, disgusted, and horrified! I expect to be thoroughly creeped out. Alas, it was not so. But if you take my high expectations away (I know, I watch movies like The Stuff and Frogs so you must be confused, but this is FRENCH horror; it’s different), it was a pretty decent movie.
Also, I told my man how I thought it would end before the flick was over. Sadly, I was spot on. I need a film that surprises me and leaves me guessing. It has been too long since I’ve had an experience like that.
Negativity aside, you really should check The Horde out. It’s a fast-paced gore-fest sure to entertain.
